When it comes time to open that new office and you’re ready to build out that custom workspace you’ve always dreamed about, give us a call at A + Construction, so you know it will be done right the first time.
Chances are you may have a first-hand view of a new drywall installation, so rather than go in blind, it’s best to know what to expect. To know what you’re looking for in a good install, let’s review some key to a good drywall installation.
Key Steps to Drywall Installation
- Measure and Cut Drywall for Ceiling: The first area covered by drywall in a new install is usually the ceiling. Sheets for use on the ceiling will be cut and measured to ensure full coverage. When you reach the area to be cut, use a T-square to assure a straight score through the drywall, then snap the extra away from the panel for a smooth cut.
- Install Ceiling Drywall: The ceiling installation involves a minimum of two people and requires one to hold the panel perpendicular to the installation location while the other drives in the screws. Screws should be evenly spaced across the panel’s width, closest to the panel’s middle. The piece is then affixed at all ends, ensuring a ½ inch gap from screw to edge all around.
- Cut Around Electrical Boxes: A rotary tool will make quick work of opening holes to accommodate electrical boxes, so prior to installing a sheet over the box, you’ll need to measure out an opening. Once measured, get to work with a rotary tool to cut it out.
- Hang Drywall on the Walls: Next step to a new drywall installation is to install the drywall onto the walls. This is another multi-person job, as it requires one person to hold while the other drives in the screws to affix the wallboard to the studs. When it comes to window openings you can overlap the panels in the opening a bit, then, when the wall is finished the openings can be cut out.
- Finishing touches: Once the drywall is installed it’s time to finish it by taping, adding compound if necessary, and sanding it down. Final touches include adding a splash of color and finesse with paint.
